Liberty's Promise

- Investing in America's Immigrant Youth

A ten-member Board of Directors oversees the activities of Liberty's Promise. The Board, which meets quarterly, represents senior professionals from the private and nonprofit sectors and features two youth representatives. Board members include:

Ms. Hiwot Ayalew: A participant in both our civics and internship programs, Ms. Ayalew left her family in Ethiopia to come to America in August 2006. At her internship at Catholic Community Services of Montgomery County, she impressed the entire staff with her maturity, willingness to try new things, and determination to do the best job possible. Ms. Ayalew speaks English, Ahmaric, and Italian. She is currently taking English classes at Montgomery College and has hopes of one day owning her own business.

Ms. Navita Bhaskar: Of Indian decent, Ms. Bhaskar came to the United States from Thailand as a child. She is trilingual in English, Hindi, and Thai. Ms. Bhaskar earned a B.S. in Marketing and International Business from the University of Maryland in 2004, and is now a Systems Integration and Technology Consultant for Accenture. She is also currently pursuing her MBA at the University of Maryland. She has substantial nonprofit experience, volunteering at the American Cancer Society, Bethesda Cares, Little Friends for Peace, and other organizations.

Mr. Scott Carlson: Now a Program Director at Chemonics International, Mr. Carlson previously served as a Fellow at the U.S. Supreme Court (with the United States Sentencing Commission) and at the Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative of the American Bar Association as Program Director for Central and Eastern Europe and Judicial Reform. He has substantial experience creating and administering nonprofit programs. A resident of Washington, D.C., Mr. Carlson is a member of the American Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar.

Ms. Meredith Dukes: Born and raised in the United States, Ms. Dukes has traveled extensively and frequently lived abroad. She holds an M.S. in Economics and International Business from the University of South Carolina and has led several international student associations and diversity associations. Ms. Dukes, fluent in Spanish, is currently a communications consultant with Accenture and the vice president of the Washington, DC, Rotaract Club, an international service organization. She was a volunteer consultant for Liberty's Promise before joining the Board in 2007.

Ms. Belinda Garza: Ms. Garza is the Manager for Financial Services and Healthcare issues at Wal-Mart's Office of Federal Government Relations, researching and monitoring federal legislative and regulatory issues for the company. Ms. Garza has had experience in working on Capitol Hill (for Ciro D. Rodriguez, D-TX) and in finance (with the U.S. Census Bureau). She volunteers for several youth-based activities in the DC Metro area, including Everybody Wins! and Hands on DC.

Ms. Krista Hendry (Board Chairperson): As the director of the Human Rights and Business Roundtable at the Fund for Peace, Ms. Hendry engages multinational businesses and human rights organizations in the problems and opportunities of economic globalization. Before taking over as director of the roundtable, Ms. Hendry served as the Fund's director of marketing. She earned an MBA degree from Georgetown University and worked at the Frankfurt (Germany) Economic Development GmbH as Asian Director.

Mr. Octavio Hinojosa Mier: Mr. Hinojosa Mier is the Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing diversity of thought within the Hispanic community. Prior to joining CHLI, he served as the Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Conference and held several positions at the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Hinojosa Mier is active in a number of nonprofits that serve Hispanic youth. He is a graduate of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University.

Mr. Bruce Lee: A practicing attorney for more than 20 years, Mr. Lee serves as the General Counsel for TissueGene, Inc., of Gaithersburg, MD, a biotech firm that develops cell-based therapies for orthopedic disease. He is an active fundraiser for the Democratic Party, serving as Vice Chairperson of Finance for the Democratic National Committee in 2003-04. Mr. Lee also works on a number of projects committed to the improvement of human rights in North Korea.

Ms. Betzaida Silva: Born in New York to Colombian parents, Ms. Silva was a great success at her internship at the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce. Chamber representatives were so impressed with her work that they created a continuing position for her and awarded her a $750 scholarship to attend Northern Virginia Community College. Ms. Silva, who is bilingual (English-Spanish), is currently employed at Masonry Masters, Inc., in Sterling, VA. She resides in Herndon, VA, with her mother and son.

Dr. Ann Van Dusen: Dr. Van Dusen is currently an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and a Senior Associate at Arabella Philanthropic Advisors. She serves on the Board of the Center for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), an organization that seeks to improve the lives of women and girls in the developing world. Dr. Van Dusen has had substantial experience in international development: she served as Chief Operating Officer for Save the Children, and held a number of senior career positions at the US Agency for International Development.
