William and Mary was the perfect incubator for me, it enabled me to figure out and then focus on what I was passionate about. It was where I got to my academic peak because it was a really supportive environment. I don’t think I had nearly that same level of support in high school. I bloomed in college because of the support of teachers, classmates, and an amazing environment where I could ask a lot of questions and get insightful answers from all the people around me who were just as eager to learn as me. For the first time in my life, I was encouraged to pursue what I was passionate about and given the resources to do it. William and Mary, like many other colleges, offered funding and grants for independent studies, internships, study abroad experiences, student activities, and other opportunities as long as you could justify it and had a vision. It gave me a platform to launch my career. There are a lot of other platforms like this, students just have to find their platform. I also encourage students to really think about what their natural strengths are, what they enjoy doing, and what they want to do on a day-to-day basis. He previously served as Senior Director for Europe at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions around the world, for more than 30 years. From 2010, he was Senior Director for Europe and oversaw NED’s grant-making activities, including supporting youth and civic education programs, in Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, the Baltics, the Balkans, and Central Europe. Potocki received his B.A. in Government and International Relations from Georgetown University and completed three years of post-baccalaureate work at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He holds an M.A. in Russian and East European Studies from Yale University. He later taught the History of East Central Europe at Georgetown and was a Fulbright Scholar in Poland. Prior to teaching, Lynn worked extensively on immigration and employment policy as CEO of Worldwide ERC, Senior VP for Global Policy at the Society for Human Resources and Executive Director at the Council for Global Immigration. She is a frequent lecturer on immigration policy and has served on many boards, including as vice-chair of World Education Service and chair of the Alliance for International Exchange. She has testified before the U.S. Congress, United Nations and OECD and has published academic papers arguing for sensible immigration policies.
